That's sad. I planned to contact him once the new website is ready,
though I could imagine that chances are low to convince him to come
back ...

>From what I can say he never had any problem with other people using,
sharing or improving his work. Just be sure to keep him as the original
author (and better avoid any re-licensing of his code).

I don't have time to maintain the plugin myself (and I am a very poor
C-coder). But if someone would maintain it, I think I could help the new
maintainer to understand the plugin's architecture and making it work
again.
