Yep, this seems to work properly again after upgrading to the v169.07
drivers - thanks for the pointer!
Unfortunately now the framerate is much jerkier when the desktop cube is
rotated (especially with the widget layer visible), and for some reason
when the cube is rotated 360 degrees it often jumps back one face for no
apparent reason.
Also I have Button12 set to rotate the cube, and after a dozen or so
button presses it suddenly stops activating the cube rotate function. I
have to click Button12 on some other window (like xev) to reactive the
rotate functionality...
Weird.
