Well I thought I was using the latest nVidia drivers (8600 GT), but I
relied on my distro's package management to install them and it looks
like they're quite out of date.

According to the latest ChangeLog from nVidia:

Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T) Display Driver
Version: 169.07
* Fixed a problem with Compiz after VT-switching.

So it looks like they've encountered and fixed this problem! I'll
upgrade the drivers and try again - at least now I know it *should* work
either way.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
Adam.
