TNX!  I wish I'd heard about zypper refresh.  Instead I did the job (weeding
bad links and setting autorefresh) manually.  

The 1-click approach is my goal.  It worked except for a dependency conflict
between plugins-main and plugins-extra.  I installed plugins-main and then
installed extra separately (no complaints about dependencies then) after the
main compiz-fusion install.  Compiz-fusion is now up and running as hoped for.
