Further investigation has demonstrated that this is a matter of a stale
_WIN_SUPPORTING_WM_CHECK property, left over form xfwm4. 

A patch was presented to work around this in xine (unknown whether it was
applied or not at present, will follow up) that simply does proper/extended
error handling.

Compiz may also want to clear this property, or set it properly. This isn't so
much a bug as an enhancement, though.
