Hi,

we plan to ship compiz-fusion by default in ubuntu. We enabled
compiz-by-default from tribe2 on (the second alpha release) and so far
we are happy with the results. Thanks everybody who made this
possible!

However there was some recent discussion if compiz-by-default is a
good idea, especially given the shortcomings in the xserver. Fedora
thinks it should not be enabled just yet [1].

We are aware of the following issues:
- video with Xv is not compositied (but we patched our drivers so that
  playback will work)
- Performance regression on windowed 3d applications - my
understanding this is only a problem on nvidia with the binary
  driver?
- General performance regressions - a problem on old/slowish
machines, I wonder if we could do something crazy with the benchmark
plugin here to do performance testing on the fly
- Windowed 3d applications - not damage events, ugly artifacts

What do you guys think about this? Is something missing from the above
list?

For me, only point 4 is a serious issue and we are debating if we
should disable compiz-fusion because of this or not (or if we can find
a workaround to this somehow).

I would appreciate your feedback on this.

Cheers,
 Michael
