How about ...

The user boots up the system, CF logo comes up and a hardware is detected in
front of them. When hardware is detected that requires a proprietary driver,
a question is asked to the user if they wish to continue using the system
even if the driver may not be compatible with the GPL.

Ubuntu boots just like this. I'm not sure about display drivers, but when I
boot my system, I get a little info box from restricted drivers manager
saying that 'Atheros Proprietary HAL Driver is being used (Because I have an
atheros card). So why not just a dialog box saying 'Hey, I'm using Driver
Software that some people might not like (Not-GPL) - Here is the licence, do
you want to continue to boot the system with Desktop Effects? If the user
says no, then restart X - unload the driver and display a warning saying
that desktop effects cannot be enabled.

.... Or use Ubuntu ;-)
